 1. What is a fMRI Scan?

A fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) scan looks at which areas of the brain are more active compared to others by measuring changes in blood oxygen levels. The scanner does not emit any radiation.

​2. Is my child eligible to undergo a fMRI scan if they have any metal in their body such as if they wear braces?

Metal such as braces, expanders, pacemakers, and metal screws are not acceptable for scanning. The following IUDs are MRI safe: Mirena, Liletta, and Lippy Loop. Metal fillings are allowable.

3. How does compensation work for the studies?

All UPMC and University of Pittsburgh studies use the Vincent Payment Solutions system. After the first study visit, participants will be mailed a Vincent Mastercard. Once received, the compensation will be loaded on to the card. These cards will be used throughout the study. These cards can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted. If you lose your Vincent card, please contact us and we can issue you a new one. 4. Where is the Mellon Institute located?

The Mellon Institute is located on 4400 Fifth Avenue.

5. Where is Bellefield Towers located?

Bellefield Towers is located on 100 North Bellefield Avenue. On the day of a study visit you can either park in the Bellefield garage (just tell the safety officer that you have an appointment), or the study will reimburse for street parking. Our offices are located on the 5th floor.
