Purpose:
We are interested in understanding how brain function is related to mind-wandering and mood swings. Specifically, we are assessing how well a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) works compared to a health and wellness intervention (HWI) among children and adolescents of parents with mood disorders (e.g., bipolar disorder and depression). Both of these group-based programs may help children respond better to stress and emotions. You may earn up to $850 for completing all parts of the study.
Who can participate: We are looking for children...
- Between 11 and 14 years old
- Have frequent mood swings, but have not been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD)
- Have a birth parent or full biological sibling who has ever experienced symptoms of depression or bipolar disorder
- Do not have braces or plan to get braces within the next 8-months
What does the study involve:
- Initial psychiatric assessment
- 4 fMRI brain scans
- Mood and anxiety questionnaires
- In-person mindfulness or wellness program group sessions for 8 weeks
